Are you worthy of the Gospel and indeed, is it even possible to be? The answers are no and yes.
Romans 3:10-20 – King James Version (KJV)
<10> As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: <11> There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. <12> They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. <13> Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: <14> Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: <15> Their feet are swift to shed blood: <16> Destruction and misery are in their ways: <17> And the way of peace have they not known: <18> There is no fear of God before their eyes. <19> Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. <20> Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
So, as to your worthiness, the answer is no, not by anything that’s part of your human nature. But wait, there’s hope.
Romans 3:21-28 – King James Version (KJV)
<21> But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; <22> Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: <23> For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; <24> Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: <25> Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; <26> To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. <27> Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. <28> Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
And there is a great hope indeed, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:1-4 – Revised Standard Version (RSV)
Life in the Spirit
<1> There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. <2> For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. <3> For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, <4> in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
There are no good people, just a good God who laid out a way of escape from our wicked nature through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Revelation 5:1-7 – King James Version (KJV)
<1> And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. <2> And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? <3> And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. <4> And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. <5> And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. <6> And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. <7> And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
John didn’t see a thousand saints come out to take the book. He saw a slain Lamb. There was no man worthy to open the book but God himself, Jesus Christ our Lord, the Lamb that was slain.
