We are surrounded by the supernatural every day. In my world it is often more real than ‘reality’. I think, though I can’t prove it, that various people live on various planes of spirituality, from the basest instinctual level to the level of prophets and seers and many levels in between.
Like IQ ratings, and again in my opinion, it’s better to be somewhere in the high middle than at either extreme. It is best though to be content in whatever state you find yourself.
The scripture tells us that we are wrong to compare ourselves among ourselves. God made each of us unique. We each have a part to play and we can play it best when we are at rest within ourselves.
That is how we can weather the storms of life, knowing that if we are walking in the Lord, He goes before us and behind us. If we try to get off His plan or shy back from it, going outside of His will and wall of safety and provision, we are bound to run into unnecessary hardship.
If we are truly one of His, He will never leave us or forsake us. It’s just better to stay as close to the center of His will as possible. To that end He has graciously left us two great helps.
The first is His Word. From the very first, He revealed His Word through prophets and sages who wrote it down for our admonition, reproof, correction and comfort. He also put it there as a history (His story) to show us how He dealt with man in times past, through the many ages, so we could have confidence He would deal with us today and tomorrow as well.
The second thing He gave us is the promise of the Holy Spirit to help us walk in His Word. You may be familiar with the story about the man who had the dream where he found himself on a beach and saw his footprints. It goes like this.
One night I had a dream. I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the sky flashed scenes from my life For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonged to me and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of my life. This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it.
‘Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way; but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why in times I needed you the most, you should leave me.’
The Lord replied, ‘My precious, precious child. I love you and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering, When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.’
