Isaac Schultz: Voyager 1 Space Probe Is Suddenly Sending NASA Wacky Data

Voyager 1 is nearly 14.5 billion miles from Earth and continues to hurtle out of the solar system at about 38,000 miles per hour. But NASA engineers working on the 44-year-old spacecraft have recently been vexed by the probe’s articulation and control system, which is generating data that appears to be completely random.

“A mystery like this is sort of par for the course at this stage of the Voyager mission,” said Suzanne Dodd, project manager for Voyager 1 and 2 at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, in a NASA release.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 has been in interstellar space for nearly 10 years. Impressively, the spacecraft continues to send data back to Earth, but recently its telemetry data has been invalid; according to NASA, the data simply doesn’t match up with whatever Voyager 1’s true position and conditions might be…

It took both Voyager probes roughly 3-4 years to reach Saturn, and they were a bit of a lighter load weight than a manned and supplied space vehicle would be. The movie “Interstellar” had a massive ship with a crew of four, plus two huge heavy robots, and tons of cargo the trip to reach Saturn took two years, with the crew going into hypersleep for the duration of the travel. That would be atleast that long, if not longer, to travel to Saturn for just an orbital look of the ringed gassy giant, obviously not land on it. So, if we subtract roughly a decade of the 44 years travel time of the Voyagers to get to the boundaries of our Sol System to interstellar space, imagine the decades it would take for a cargo-loaded manned starship to reach that destination. It would obviously involve a safe and sustainable stasis/hypersleep system for the crew to sleep the distance away. But what, exactly, would be the point when entering an even deeper darked black void where anything even remotely reachable, but not even livable? The “Interstellar” crew was actually heading for a wormhole beyond Saturn that enabled them to ‘jump’ to another galaxy or solar system within our galaxy.
