State Dept Knew of Gain of Function Research; Quashed Investigation

June 4, 2021 – State Department officials have come forward claiming they were warned off investigating the Wuhan Lab “Gain of Function” research, by department career officials. These higher ups at State were concerned that any investigation into Wuhan Institute of Virology would eventually expose U.S. funding of the research and could “open up a can of worms.” Instead, a cover-up was developed.

Daily Mail reports on the corrupt career officials at the State Department:

Career staffers at the State Department ‘warned’ officials not to investigate the possibility that COVID-19 leaked from a Wuhan lab, fearing it would expose U.S. funding for gain-of-function research there, according to a new report.

Thomas DiNanno, former acting assistant secretary of the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance raised the concern in a memo reported by Vanity Fair on Thursday.

DiNanno wrote that staff from two bureaus, his own and the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, ‘warned’ leaders ‘not to pursue an investigation into the origin of COVID-19’ because it would ‘open a can of worms’ if it continued.

In one State Department meeting, officials say colleagues explicitly told them not to explore the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s (WIV) gain-of-function research, because it would bring unwelcome attention to the U.S. taxpayer funds that were supporting the work.

Gain-of-function research is a controversial field that involves collecting dangerous viruses and genetically modifying them to be more deadly, in order to study the risks of future outbreaks.

Richard H. Ebright, a professor at Rutgers, has compared the field of gain-of-function research to ‘looking for a gas leak with a lighted match.’

On Thursday night, former Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox’s The Ingraham Angle that the National Institute of Health tried to suppress the department’s investigation.

He said that there was pushback in his own department from people who did not agree with him or Trump, and he also had to deal with ‘internal debate’ from the NIH.

Pompeo added that Dr Anthony Fauci, who runs NIAID under the NIH, was spreading Chinese talking points in his interviews earlier in the day by voicing ‘the exact same theories that the Chinese Communist Party has presented for over a year now’.

‘To hear Fauci this morning talk about how the Chinese have an interest in us discovering what happened is just crazy talk. The Chinese have a deep interest in covering it up. They have done so pretty darn effectively,’ he said.

‘He implies good faith for the Chinese Communist Party. We are on the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square [incident]. For Dr. Fauci to go out and think the CCP cared that there were people in Wuhan who were dying… is just naïve beyond all possible imagination.’

The new report by Vanity Fair examining the behind-the-scenes battle over COVID’s origins follows new evidence to support the theory that the coronavirus pandemic may have leaked from WIV — raising questions about why the possibility wasn’t investigated more thoroughly from the outset.

‘The story of why parts of the U.S. government were not as curious as many of us think they should have been is a hugely important one,’ David Feith, former deputy assistant secretary of state in the East Asia bureau, told Vanity Fair.

In an interview with the outlet, DiNanno describes how his probe into the lab leak theory was thwarted at every turn, with hostile and antagonistic technical staff warning him not to open ‘Pandora’s box.’

Things came to a head at a meeting on December 9, when State Department staff met to discuss what the department could or should say publicly about the Wuhan lab.

According to people at the meeting, Christopher Park, the director of the State Department’s Biological Policy Staff in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, advised that people shouldn’t say anything that would point to the U.S. government’s own role in gain-of-function research.  – Daily Mail

The career staffers at State (also known as “Deep Staters”) appeared to find it perfectly acceptable to cover for China to avoid the American people discovering that U.S. taxpayer dollars were being used to fund this Gain of Function research overseas.

This scandal is massive. First, the official Department of State policy ordered the suppression of unethical research, for fear of exposure of U.S. funding. This was later enforced by social media, further government infringing of individual rights. Second, using “private companies” to circumvent the First Amendment to censor citizens and media outlets, the government then was able to enforce the resulting Gain of Function research onto the public.

This is hardly the first time the Department of State has covered up U.S. government corruption. Many claim that under Hillary Clinton’s tenure, DOS essentially was turned into a pay-for-play scheme via donations to her private “Clinton Foundation.” Interestingly, those donations have dropped by 90% since Clinton left office. The article continues:

Park, a Trump appointee like DiNanno, had been involved in lifting a U.S. government moratorium on funding for gain-of-function research in 2017.

Park was reportedly not the only one who raised concerns about the investigation ultimately raising questions about U.S. funding.

As the group probed the lab-leak scenario and other possibilities, its members were repeatedly advised not to open a ‘Pandora’s box,’ four former State Department officials told the magazine.

The admonitions ‘smelled like a cover-up,’ said DiNanno, ‘and I wasn’t going to be part of it.’

Park told Vanity Fair: ‘I am skeptical that people genuinely felt they were being discouraged from presenting facts.’

He insisted that he had just been making the case that it ‘is making an enormous and unjustifiable leap…to suggest that research of that kind [meant] that something untoward is going on.’

The acting undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security at the time, Chris Ford, was hostile to an investigation, according to officials.

In a January 2021 memo, Ford pushed back at against an initial probe from a panel of experts, because he believed it contained weak evidence.

‘I would also caution you against suggesting that there is anything inherently suspicious—and suggestive of biological warfare activity—about People’s Liberation Army (PLA) involvement at WIV on classified projects,’ the memo said.

‘[I]t would be difficult to say that military involvement in classified virus research is intrinsically problematic, since the U.S. Army has been deeply involved in virus research in the United States for many years.’

DiNanno then hit back with his own memo, arguing that Ford was misrepresenting the panel’s finding. He also objected to previous warnings about not investigating because of the risk of opening a can of worms. – Daily Mail

One of the other interesting theories regarding the origins of the Coronavirus is that it was actually created and weaponized at Ft. Detrick, Maryland and then released in October 2019 at the World Military Games, in which 110 countries participated. It just so happened to be held in Wuhan that year. If the U.S. government created the virus and then released it in Wuhan, it may have been to damage China’s credibility and standing. I know that this is a difficult theory to even consider, but we must look at all possibilities. Just yesterday, former Trump advisor and host of the War Room Pandemic show Steve Bannon pointed this out. He claimed that the Fauci emails and Gain of Function lab leak theory was to distract from the fact that this was man-made and intentionally released. He claims this was no “accident.”

Legal Insurrection reports that theory about Ft. Detrick comes from China, who dredged it up to distract from their own culpability:

The current administration and the American media have suddenly accepted the likely reality that the coronavirus caused the pandemic came from a Chinese laboratory.

This development means that the Chinese Communist Party must start a new narrative.

Therefore, Chinese officials demand an investigation into the famed American research facility, Fort Detrick. Apparently, it has links to the COVID leak.

The US doesn’t care about facts or truth at all, neither is it interested in a serious scientific study on the origins. Its only aim is to use the pandemic for stigmatization and political manipulation to shift the blame,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

Zhao then referenced Fort Detrick, a US Army biomedical research laboratory in Maryland that has been linked — without evidence — to the emergence of the virus by Chinese officials and state media outlets.

‘What secrets are hidden in the suspicion-shrouded Fort Detrick and the over 200 US bio-labs all over the world?” Zhao said, adding that the US “owes an explanation to the world.’

The Chinese state media offered up the Fort Detrick theory last March. But, unfortunately, they pushed it more by the time the World Health Organization (WHO) visited Wuhan to examine the origins of the virus. – Legal Insurrection

It is quite interesting that the media and the current administration suddenly decided to accept this theory after months of condemning it as “racist” and a “conspiracy theory” created by Trump.

Whatever the real truth is, I am sure it lies somewhere in between. There are many people who benefit from the so-called pandemic, and have made record profits as others were forced to close their businesses and many American’s have lost everything. Hopefully the truth comes out, and whoever is responsible is held accountable.
